ATHLETE PROFILE
This year, we're profiling tri club members! This week, meet Sylvain Lefebvre:
Other than Triathlon, What do You Do? I'm a recent graduate currently working at Planet Fitness.
How Many Years in Tri-Club? This will be my first year.
Why Did You Start Triathlon? In February 2010 I decided to take up running and started training for my 1st race, the "Oak Island 10k." Needless to say, I enjoyed it and I wanted to get faster. I then read a book Run Less, Run Faster based on three quality runs per week and cross-training (Swimming or Cycling) the other days. I bought a road bike in May 2010 and the thoughts of Triathlon started to creep in.
First Triathlon: Kure Beach Double Sprint!
What is Your Reason [this Week] for Tri-ing? I know it takes a lot of work to become an efficient swimmer and I wanted to take on that challenge.
Favorite Races I've Completed: Pinehurst Olympic Triathlon. Why? The race course was beautiful and it was my first olympic distance. I knew it would be hilly, and I was ready for that.
Run, Bike or Swim? What's Your Favorite? Run, I love going to the track.
Run, Bike or Swim? What's Your Biggest Challenge? The swim is a challenge. I enjoy being in the water though, especially the morning sunrise ocean swims.
Best Triathlon Moment: Cheering with Iain Fergussen at the Pinehurst Tri and yelling "You gotta get this guy!" to Brian Campbell when he overtook his main competitor during the last 50 yards to claim the #1 spot for the Inside Out series. That was pretty cool.
Favorite Thing about the Sport of Triathlon: The diversity of workouts throughout all three disciplines.
Favorite Pre-Race Food: Baguette and Nutella. I have been eating that since I can remember, it won't ever fail me.
Favorite Post-Race Meal: PT's burger.
Gear You Can't Live Without: My bike and my Garmin 110!
Number of Races in 2010: 4
Triathlon Goals for 2011: Become an average swimmer or better within my age group. Breaking a 40min 10K. I'm planning on doing two 70.3's, White Lake and B2B.
Books on My Nightstand: Surfer Magazine and Jack Daniel's Running Formula.
Last Concert Attended: Neil Young solo tour in Spartanburg, SC. It was epic.
Bookmarked on My Computer: My latest one, "How to do a run focus this winter." My favorite one "WBlivesurf," they have an HD camera to check the surf...how cool is that?
Favorite Wilmington Restaurant: Caprice Bistro...they have a good "Steak au Poivre."
What's on my iPod: I like listening to Podcasts. My friend Matt Speath puts on a great one called "Food Integrity Now" advocating integrity in our global food source. Music-wise lots of Neil Young, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Grateful Dead, Radiohead, The Black Crowes, Phish....
If I could be an elite athlete in another sport, it would be: Soccer.
On an Off Day from Training I like to: Hanging out, surfing or kiteboarding if the waves are good, playing guitar, golf and fishing.
Ideal Vacation Would Be: Waves!! A point break, head high, offshore winds, just me and a select few friends.
Three Things on My Bucket List: Sailing around the world, have the will to tow-in a HUGE wave, and the Ironman.
My Motto: Just trying to be positive and say "yes" to any task.
Athlete You'd Like to Spend a Day With: Pele.
