News for December 29, 2011

There is a TON of news this week! We're having a party, there are a ton of workouts in the next few days and it's the new year!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

We are having a NEW YEAR PARTY in the new year. Not this weekend - but in the new year! On Saturday, January 21, 2012 we're having a potluck party for club members [past and present] and our families. This year, we're meeting at the Masonboro Forest clubhouse on Saturday evening. Bring a dish to share! You'll receive an evite tomorrow with details [time, directions, etc.]!

WORKOUT NEWS
If you want to finish 2011 or start 2012 with a workout - you'll find one for every body this weekend.

Saturday Run:  This week's long run has been moved to Saturday! Meet at 6:30a for a pre-run social at the Starbucks at Landfall Center. Run starts at 7:00am. Choose your mileage and your pace and customize your route.

Saturday Ride: The Fitness for Life cycle center is open on Saturday. CLICK HERE to reserve your spot on a CompuTrainer ride. There is a 7:00a - 8:15a class and a 8:30a - 9:45a class. Plan to bring your bike, two towels and hydration and arrive 20 minutes early for setup.

Sunday Yoga: Our very own Heather Metzler is teach Hot Slow Mo Flow yoga at the Wilmington Yoga Center on Oleander Drive. Hot classes are held a room heated to 90-95 degrees, which allows for purifying, heat-building practices that stretch and strengthen safely as they detoxify and release impurities from the body. Please bring a towel and drink plenty of water before hand. Participants can slow down and heat up at the same time in Slow Flow classes, and the slower pace makes these classes accessible to those new to practicing in the heat. This class is open to all levels, although some prior yoga experience is recommended. CLICK HERE to register.

Sunday Polar Plunge:  Join us on Sunday at the south end of Wrightsville Beach for our third Polar Plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. Each year, Brian Campbell races us into the waves for a refreshing dip into the sea. This year, we're meeting at the jetty at NOON for our annual dip. Bring your families and a towel (or two). No wetsuits allowed. Bikinis optional. We'll warm down with coffee afterwards at the Landfall Center Starbucks at the corner of Eastwood and Military Cutoff.

Next week, we'll add the Saturday bike sessions at the YWCA! We'll bike indoors on the trainers on January 7 at 7:00a. Please arrive early (6:45a) to set up your bike and your run transition! If the weather is good, we'll do a short run after the ride.

MOTIVATION

Finally, check out this amazing story of brothers who compete in local triathlons as a team. Conner began doing triathlons as a way to connect with his younger brother Cayden, who has cerebral palsy. Last spring, Conner towed Cayden in a raft for a pool swim, towed him in a bike trailer for the ride and pushed him in a stroller for the run in their very first triathlon. This video is worth watching for the footage of their second race. Cayden is smiling in nearly every shot of the race. Plus, as Conner is pushing Cayden in the run, his coach asks if the stitch in his side is gone. Conner answers, "No. But I've got this." CHECK IT OUT HERE!
